Healthy Foods

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Food for thought - today we are talking about nutrition and the food pyramid. Follow this link to learn more about the things our bodies need to be healthy. Then we are going to spend some time trying to create the best and worst meals from many of your favorite places to eat.

After checking out some food labels, I would like you to go ahead and begin doing some research. You need to know about how many calories a person should consume in one day so you have an idea about how many calories your fast food meal should have.

When you comment, please make one comment for your task team. Your comment needs to include the healthiest and worst fast food meal your team can create. For each meal, please include the amount of calories in your meal. Also, please include any other interesting information you find. You may include the amount of fat and sugar. Here is the link to the fast food information.

Good luck!
~ Mr. Moore and Mrs. Kay

I know that it is hard for you to imagine how important eating healthy is in your life. I love fast food of any kind. My wife used to laugh at me all the time because I could tell her which fast food restaurant had better service!

After a bit of a scare with a doctor this year, I've had to change my ways. I've always been in good shape but I had to get a blood test and the blood test showed that I was a bit of a mess inside and for a few scary weeks, I had to sit and wait. Waiting for good news is bad, but waiting for bad news is interminable.

After cutting out some (not all) my trips to fast food places, I began to feel better, and I begin to have so much energy, my 3 kids couldn't keep up. My blood test cleared up and things look great.

So, learning to eat healthy now may seem like a chore, and I can tell still tell you I would rather have a Big Mac then an apple. But, I wouldn't trade feeling good and being to have energy all for all the fries in the world

What would be hard for you to give up? I'll give up my daily Starbucks if someone will give up something they like that's unhealthy!

Dear Mr. Moore,

I love the idea of studying foods. I am really liking looking for healthy foods and bad foods. I would like it if we had more time to study this topic . I understand though that we have more things to learn and so little time.

I am really looking forward to readying your comments. I am the science teacher at Sandburg Elementary, also in Littleton, and a friend of Mr. Moore's. My students are surprised to hear that I've been a vegetarian for over 20 years. I wonder if more students now are vegetarians than when I was a kid? It can be a healthy diet, but there are challenges too. It was hard to build muscle when I raced mountain bikes. Can you think of other challenges?

Dear Mr. Moore,

For our best meal we chose was a side salad from Wendy's, and a normal sized water. In it was 35 calories, 0 grams for trans fat, saturated fat, and trans fat. The sodium was 25 grams, the sugars are 4 grams. The cost for the side salad was $2.04, and the cost for the drink was $1.07. Our side salad is a part of the vegetable food group.
For our worst meal, we chose 3 hard tacos from Chipotle, and an extra large coke. In only one of our hard tacos there are 0 grams trans fat, 10 grams saturated fat, and the total fat was 38 grams. Our sodium was 2,205 grams, and the sugars was 3 grams. If all this is in only in one taco, imagine what you'd be putting in your body with 3, of them! Well, you don't have to even think about it, because we're gonna tell you. We multiplied 10 grams of saturated times 3, and it was 30 grams of saturated fat. But that's not it. We then added 38 grams total fat 3 times, and it was 114 grams! Can you believe that! Then, we multiplied 2,205 grams times 3, and you won't believe what we got! Well, we won't tell you, because we want you to figure it out for yourself. And last of all, we multiplied 3 grams of sugar times 3 and got 9. Not bad, but not good either. Our hard tacos are part of the grain group, vegetable group, meat group, and the oil group. Our hard tacos sure aren't healthy! But I am still gonna eat them!

Sincerely your friends from task team 2,

Dear Mr. Moore,
Fast food is really good but it can be unhealthy. When we looked for the healthiest meal, we decided to pick something from Subway restaurant. We choose veggie delite wraps with water to drink. This meal has 330 calories, 8.0 grams of fat, 750 grams of sodium, and 2 grams of sugar. The food groups are dairy, vegetable, and meat. The meal costs $3.50. Our worst meal came from McDonald's. We got a double quarter pounder with cheese, with a large Coca-Cola, large fries, 5 packs of ketchup, and triple chocolate thick shake. In total this meal has 3359 calories, 42 grams of fat, grams of sodium 1730, grams of sugar 11. Children should only have 2000 calories a day. Eating that would mean your eating a day and a half worth of calories. You better eat right or it will come back to haunt you.

Dear Mr. Moore,
We found some interesting information about the best and worst meals. For the best meal we decided to choose something from Subway. The meal was Minestrone (soup). The food group we thought for Minestrone (soup) was vegetables. The drink we thought was water. The total calories are 80 grams , the total fat is 1.5 grams, the saturated fat is 0.5 grams, the sodium is 1130 grams, the sugar is 4 grams, and the total price is $6.60.
For the worst meal, we chose Triple With Everything And Cheese for the meal, large french fries for the side dish (also with 2 packets of ketchup), and we chose Vanilla Bean Frosty Shake (large). The food group we thought for Triple With Everything And Cheese was dairy, meat and vegetables, the food group we thought for large French fries was vegetables, the food group we thought for Vanilla Bean Frosty Shake was milk, and the food group we thought for the 2 packets of ketchup was nothing. The total price was $11.24. And the last but not least, we found an interesting fact. Water has 0 grams of calories, 0 grams of sodium, 0 grams of total fat, 0 grams of saturated fat, and 0 grams of sugar.

Sincerely,
Team 6 (Torsha, Narah, Diana, Ruben)

Dear Mr. Moore,

We learned some pretty interesting stuff. For example for our worst meal we picked Wendy's. One Wendy meal has 1520+ grams of sodium more known as salt. We only need 240 grams for our R.D.A of sodium. The calories it has in it is 1530 which is a lot for people, the fat it has is 50 grams. Saturated fat is 13.5 grams, the sugar that it has inside of it is 131 grams. For the drink we got a chocolate fudge frosty, the price for the whole meal is $8.06.

We got our best meal from Subway, the meal that we got is named Veggie delight. The calories it has in it is 506 , it has 7.5 grams fat inside of the meal. There are 530 grams of sodium and 7 grams of sugar in the Veggie delight. Of course for the drink we got is water, for the price of the whole meal it is $3.50.
