"Eleven" by Sandra Cisneros

In the mentor text, Eleven, by Sandra Cisneros, how does the author use what we have been talking about in our writer's workshop?

1. How does the author create a strong emotional connection?

2. How does the main character change in the story?

3. What are some examples of the author showing instead of telling us about the emotions in the story?

Please answer these questions by writing a comment to this post.

I can make an emotional connection to this story because when I turned eleven I didn't feel eleven eather. When I went to school that day it seemed like today wasn't even my birthday. All my friends pretty much forgot today was my birthday.

Mr. Moore

I know a example in the story eleven that shows how the character feels than rather telling us about how she feels. Here is the example, "It has to belong to somebody," Mrs. Price keeps saying.

Dear Mr. Moore,
The main character changes in the story by telling the teacher that the sweater is not hears and then she starts crying. Then she said that she is turning eleven. When she was crying that reminds me of when I was three.

She creates a strong emotion by showing how she feels.

Dear Mr. Moore,

When I read question three, I thought about the part of the story when the little girl pushed the red sweater to the very edge of her desk. I think she felt like she was just a little voice that no one listened to.

Mr. Moore the author can create a strong emotional connection by showing how she or he feels instead of telling the people.

Dear Mr. Moore,
When I read the story Eleven an example of the author showing instead of telling is when the main character moves her sweater to the end of the desk with a ruler. Also when she moved her chair away from her desk.

Mr. Moore,
I like how the author shows emotion like when she says she cried and spit came out of her mouth.

Mr. Moore I think that the author makes a strong emotional connection when Rachel says " What they don't tell you about birthdays and what they never tell you is that you're also ten, and nine, and eight... " Arturo
