To Infinity... And Beyond!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Here is your science assignment for today.

Step 1: Read this entire post, then watch the video clips on your own computer

Step 2:
Take notes - I would read the questions below, and use them to organize my notes...

Step 3:
Work with your task team to create a written response. Your response needs to have input from each team member. Your team will post the response as a comment to this post - as always, it is a good idea to draft and save your comment as a document first! Push your thinking, and show the world what you learned from these videos...

Please consider these questions as you draft your comment:

1. Where is Earth located?
2. What is the Sun?
3. About how many stars are there? How many solar systems? What about galaxies?
4. How are plants, water, stars, and people all similar?
5. How do we determine the age of stars?
6. Is it true that star gazing is like looking into the past? Why or why not?
7. What are the 3 kinds of galaxies? Do you know the different types of stars?
8. If you were the teacher, what 3 important facts would you want your students to know after they saw these video clips?
9. Do you think that there may be life outside of our solar system? Why or why not?
10. What questions do you still have about stars, galaxies, and the universe?

Thanks!
~Mr. Moore

Earth is located near the sun which is located in the galaxy of the milky way. The sun is a star that everyone knows about and that is a source of light and energy for us. There are a hundred billion galaxies. The three kinds of galaxies are the Spiral, Elliptical, and Irregular. I think they're is life outside our solar system because the universe is vast and since they're is 100 billion solar systems there could be a planet with similarities to Earth. Stars are born for dust and and gas. Small stars burn cold. Stars are like us by being born and dying like people and plants like the life cycle. It's like looking into the past because it's so far away in light years that the light you see from the stars have actually been projecting for several years because it's so far away.

Dear Mr. Moore,
We found a lot of information about the galaxies and stars from the videos.
The three different types of galaxies are; Spiral galaxies(it has many spirals), Elliptical galaxies(oval shaped, no spirals, includes older stars), and the Irregular galaxy(it has no shape, and it is very rare). The closest star to the planet besides the sun is 4.3 light years away, which is 26 trillion years in human numbers. Adding to that, the star's name is Proxima Centauri. There are about 100billion stars in the Milky Way. Many of the scientists believe that there are 100billion galaxies- that is a lot of galaxies! Older stars dwell in the center, or nucleus. Younger stars are further away. It takes 200 million years for our sun to orbit the center of the galaxy. The stars we see at night are part of the Milky way. The milky way is almost 100,000miles away from the Earth. Also, stars gather together in big pieces-that's what makes a galaxy. Did you know that it would take 5 million years by jet plane to reach this star? I learned that our Sun started started giving off light and energy 5 billion years ago, and scientists predict that the Sun will give off light and energy for another 5billion years, before it explodes and a dwarf forms and starts growing into a new star. I will be dead by then so I will be safe from the explosion, I hope. Nebula is the birth place of the stars; the stars are born from the dust and gas within the clouds. This is a very interesting fact- stars have life cycles too! This was a very nice privilege and we are glad we learned many interesting things.
Sincerely,
Task Team2 (Narah, Admira, Anna Karen, Elias)

Dear Mr. Moore,

Have you ever wondered what has been going on in space and the stars. There three main types of galaxies which are Spiral, Elliptical and Irregular. Some things that make up a Spiral galaxies are gas and dust. The Elliptical galaxy has very few gas and dust, that there is very few stars in Elliptical galaxies. In addition, the Elliptical galaxy can be over one million light years across. Irregular galaxies aren't very common and are mostly found in groups or clusters. To add on, Irregular galaxies are formed by collisions. About only 32 of the galaxies we know are Irregular. There are more than 100 billion stars, to many for us to count. It takes more than 200 million years for the sun to orbit. There are more stars then sand in all the beaches in the world put together. Speaking of stars, what may seem true or not but stars are actually born from dust and gas from clouds. Galaxies are just a group of stars which is about 100,000 light years across. Older stars are found in the middle of the galaxy. There are mass in a star and it will take billions of year for the star to die. Most of the enormous stars are super noble and soon become dense which forms into a black hole. Clouds have dust, dirt and gas, the dust and dirt from clouds causes stars to form. The light we see in stars now left stars over 4 years ago so it's lie were looking in the past. The Earth is located on the 3rd planet in the Solar System.

Sincerely,
Task Team 3 (Torsha, Julyssa, Cesar and Shawn)

Dear Mr. Moore
We learned that the sun is 30,000 light years away from the milky way. Scientist believe that there are 100 billion galaxies in the universe! The three different types of galaxies are the spiral galaxies, Elliptical Galaxies witch are oval shaped and irregular witch are not as common as others. The milky way is over 100 billion stars arranged in a circular disc and the oldest stars are in the center of the galaxies. Scientist believe that there are about 100 billion galaxies in the universe. The closest star to us is the sun and is called proxima centuri. Did you know that one teaspoon of stardust from any neutron star weighs more than one cruise ship filled with people. The more massive a star is the shorter its life. Did you know it takes two million years to orbit the center of the Earth? If you can clearly see the spiral shape the galaxy is called a base-on spiral. If you instead see the galaxy from the sky it is called an edge on spiral. irregular galaxies are not as common as spiral galaxies. Did you know that are sun is awfully young? Scientist believe that our sun got power over 5 billion years ago and will continue to give light for another 5 billion years. Did you know that Nebulae is the birth place for stars? Theres 100 billion stars in each galaxy (about). This is what we learned.

Sincerely
Task team 1

Dear Mr.Moore,

Here are the answers to your questions you asked.#1. Earth is located in the galaxy, Milky Way.#2. The sun is a star that gives us heat to live.#3.There are about one hundred billion stars. And scientists believe that there are one hundred billion galaxies in the universe.#4.Plants and Stars are like us because they live for a matter of time and they die just like we all do,we get an a accident and they burn out.And water is like us because they have a life cycle as we do too.#5.We determine the age of stars by finding out where the center of the bulge is and if they are found near the center they are the oldest and of they are far away from the bulge they are young.#6.Yes because it is like looking into the future because it is so far away in light years and the future is pretty far away from us.#7.The three types of galaxies are Spiral, Elliptical, and Irregular. The older ones are closer to the bulge and the younger stars are found farther away from the bulge. If we were the teacher the three important facts would be that it would take two hundred million years for our sun to orbit the center of the galaxy. The next fact is that there are about two hundred million stars. The last fact is that the sun is thirty thousand light-years away from the bulge. Our task team thinks that there is no such thing to be alive any other planet or solar system because there is no water and oxygen and other stuff. #10.We have no more questions.
Sincerely,
Task team 5,
(Lupita, Angelica U., Isabel, and Abraham.)
